Traumatic Brain Injury Field Assessment Program (TBI-FAP)
Capability Summary: A far-forward (Role 1/Role 2) TBI assessment and monitoring device that enables medical personnel the ability to objectively and rapidly assess conscious/unconscious Warfighters exposed to a potentially concussive event for evidence of brain hemorrhage (informing both size and location) and swelling throughout the cranial vault to assist in triage, treatment, and evacuation decisions in large scale combat operations (LSCO). Additionally, the capability will assess and monitor cognitive function and other mild TBI-relevant domains to inform progressive return to activity. The capability will be portable for use by a medic residing far-forward on the battlefield and will have a low logistical footprint.
Impact: Provide a far-forward, objective, easy to use, TBI assessment capability with a minimal logistical footprint. Reduce the burden on medical assets by speeding triage, reducing unnecessary evacuations, and facilitating proper TBI care earlier and more accurately.
The TBI-FAP will:
- Enable Army modernization goals of optimizing evacuation and informing triage; reducing the burden on medical assets by speeding triage, reducing unnecessary evacuations, and facilitating proper TBI care earlier and more accurately.
- Serve as an adjunct to clinical practice within multidomain LSCO and prevent unnecessary medical evacuations to higher roles of care, thereby enabling better utilization of existing resources and maintaining combat power.
- Provide a low logistical footprint and affordable system lifecycle cost.
