Non-Helmet Traumatic Brain Injury Preventative Devices

Q-Collar

Capability Summary: A non-helmet, wearable medical device that prevents or reduces the risk of Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) during potentially concussive events including impact, occupational exposures, and blast overpressure from artillery, missiles, weapon systems, and improvised explosive devices (IEDs). The effort is currently focused on the assessment and evaluation of the Q-Collar (Q30 Innovations, Inc.) for use in military operational and training environments.

Impact: To prevent or reduce the risk of TBI during potentially concussive events in military operational and training environments.

The Non-Helmet TBI Preventative Device program will:

  • Assess Q-Collar efficacy in the reduction of risk or severity of TBI when exposed to blast pressure wave events in a preclinical, animal (ferret) study, and potentially seek a Food and Drug Administration (FDA) expanded indication for use.
  • Assess Q-Collar safety in severe and penetrating TBIs in a preclinical, animal (swine) study and safety in long-term use.
  • Evaluate Q-Collar fit, tolerability, and field suitability in military operational and training environments.
  • Conduct various environmental and mechanical bench testing to assess Q-Collar durability in extreme conditions.
