Making the Most of the Summer Season

By COL Ryan Bailey, published on 06/04/2018

Each June, our nation recognizes the great men and women of our U.S. Army Veterinary Corps, as we celebrate the anniversary of its formation on June 3, 1916. For the past 102 years, this organization has been helping to keep our country safe with work that goes far beyond the general care of animals. In the medical materiel world, especially in product development, there is a clinical pathway that begins with clinical animal studies on the science and technology side. This vital research is then translated to human clinical studies, to develop medical products and vaccines that help save the lives of many throughout our military and civilian populations.

At USAMMDA, we have a vibrant history of Army Vet Corps officers serving our command, and currently we have two members on our team, Lt. Col. Carl Soffler and Lt. Col. Mark Smith. With their scientific and clinical expertise, these men help us to deliver products that are extremely important to the mission of Army Medicine. Without the knowledge and guidance of our Vet Corps officers, we couldn't do the amazing things we do in support of our Warfighters throughout the world – so I believe I speak for all when I say "Thank you" for more than a century of dedication to our country!

Also in June, schools begin to let out for the summer break, and our cities, towns and neighborhoods gradually become flooded with children who are ready for outdoor fun. Although most kids may like to take it easy over the break, it's really a good idea to look into summer camps and sports programs for our children, to keep them busy and engaged part of the time. I'm sure many of us will be traveling with our families at some point during the summer months, so please travel safely and check the forecast often, as thunderstorms can pop up at any time with the warmer weather. Be careful when grilling outside, and remember to drink plenty of water and use proper sunscreen to protect your skin.

It's always nice to enjoy some leave time during the nice weather, especially since we've earned the time off. I know my family and I are looking forward to a relaxing trip to the shore this season, and we always appreciate being able to sit back and have some downtime with family and friends. But while we do need to relax, we should also keep in mind our personal health and fitness, and the summer is a great time to get outside for a walk or run. Before or after work, or even on a lunch break, a nice walk always seems to help us shift gears and unwind a bit. And in between all of this, don't forget about the World Cup soccer championship that kicks off later this month. Although the U.S. team may be absent this year, I'm sure there will be plenty of exciting matches for everyone to enjoy!

Finally, our U.S. Army Medical Materiel Agency and USAMMDA Project Management Office realignment is coming up on July 8, and this remains one of our top priorities, so we can make this a successful transition for everyone involved. Please continue to monitor the USAMMDA intranet site for information regarding this change, especially as we begin to get closer to the date. We are fully committed to making this a huge success for Army Medicine and all of our Service Members!

Let's always remember that we're saving lives with everything we do here at USAMMDA!
