We Do Great Work!

By COL Ryan Bailey, published on 12/18/2017

Recently, I returned from a visit touring one of our partner organizations overseas, the Armed Forces Research Institute of Medical Sciences in Thailand, and I must say the trip was a very educational and eye-opening experience. It was humbling to see the global impact of USAMMDA and the U.S. Army Medical Research and Materiel Command as we continue our development of vaccines for dengue, malaria, HIV and other illnesses. Without question, these critical programs will eventually have a global impact. Our successful results will go far beyond helping to protect our U.S. military population &endash; these will one day help to protect our world. These diseases are some of the harshest that exist today, and it's difficult to realize USAMMDA's contributions until you see exactly what we're helping to prevent.

Since my first day in command at USAMMDA, I knew this mission was something very unique and very special. With each passing day, I have a deeper appreciation and understanding of our expansive portfolio of more than 40 medical products, and the amazing programs that drive them. In light of this, the fantastic people of our outstanding organization are certainly our greatest asset &endash; your unwavering dedication is critical to accomplishing our mission. I can't thank you enough for all of your efforts each and every day!

While we're all focused on supporting our Warfighters, I'm also grateful for your input on improving the way we do business. Recently, we drafted our new objectives for USAMMDA's Strategic Plan, and we'll be implementing these in the weeks and months ahead. As I continue to meet with outside organizations and commercial partners, it's evident that our reputation is far-reaching and very well respected. And this status is certainly the result of the effective methods we utilize for our planning and execution of tasks. I am extremely proud to be a part of such a great organization.

In line with our forward thinking, we are continuing to work on the Regulatory re-engineering initiative to improve our support of the entire USAMRMC. Although this is certainly a big task, we remained focused on getting this done as quickly as possible to maintain our readiness level and our ability to act swiftly when called upon by our higher headquarters. Yes, we truly do great work!

And while we're in the midst of the holiday season, let's make sure we set aside time to celebrate with our friends, family and loved ones. We certainly work hard throughout the year, so we deserve a little time to unwind and decompress as we prepare for the new year ahead. I hope everyone has the opportunity to catch a few college football Bowl games, while relaxing with some seasonal snacks and refreshments. However, if these "refreshments" contain alcohol, please remember to stay safe, and make sure you have a plan for getting home safely after the festivities. And always pay close attention to road conditions throughout the winter. Safety should always be a top priority, regardless of the holiday or season!

As we enjoy some downtime with loved ones, please remember our military members who are away from their own families in order to keep us safe. Take time to say a prayer for their safety and quick return home, and honor their service by acknowledging their great sacrifice for our country &endash; this is truly what makes America the "land of the free."

I wish everyone Happy Holidays and a wonderful New Year — and let's hope that 2018 is our best year yet!
